How teachers can make the most of Split & Erasmus Courses Croatia? Hey teachers! Fresh off your inspiring Erasmus+ Course in Croatia Split, it’s time to unwind and explore the captivating city of Split and its surrounding gems. This guide unveils hidden treasures and must-see sights to fill your free time with unforgettable experiences.
Cultural Heritage & Historic Landmarks
Diocletian’s Palace
The first landmark that Split is recognisable for is Diocletian’s Palace.
It is one of the world’s best-preserved monuments of Roman architecture, and it is where people still live! Don’t expect a palace of the usual size because it is not!
The Palace is rectangular (approximately 215 x 180 meters) with four large towers at the corners, doors on each of the four sides, and four small towers on the walls.
There are charming shops, cafe bars, restaurants, art galleries, and museums to add more value to your unique experience there!
Cathedral of Saint Domnius
Among the European cathedrals, this one in Split is the oldest, with the cathedral’s bell tower (57m) and the most original Dalmatian Medieval architecture, which started in the 13th century. You can climb the steps to the top of the bell tower and enjoy a spectacular view of the entire Split.
Riva
This popular promenade is the city’s living room, the most popular and important public place in Split. You can sit there throughout the day to enjoy the view, food, and drinks.
Marjan
The hill that overlooks the city has always been the most impressive part of Split. You can witness a harmony between nature and urban that is rarely found; on one side is the densely populated city, and on the other, it is a peninsula of almost spotless nature.

Towns and Places to Visit
Solin
The cradle of ancient and early Croatian history is located on the Jadro River, where an endemic subspecies of the Adriatic trout has also developed.
It has the youngest population in Croatia and a rich cultural and natural heritage, all of which make it an attractive tourist destination.
If you decide to visit Solin, you can stay in a hotel, a hostel, or a private accommodation. In the peaceful ambience along the Jadro River, you can also try the rich local culinary offer, particularly the trout.
Kaštela
Kaštela are picturesque little towns of the central Dalmatia, between Split and Trogir. Under the name Kaštela, seven interconnected little towns are hidden and lined up along the shore of Kaštela Bay.
They are by name: Štafilić, Novi, Stari, Lukšić, Kambelovac, Gomilica and Sućurac.
Trogir
To get to Trogir, you can use public transport, and it only takes half an hour from Split to admire its beauty. The vicinity of the Split Airport (5 kilometres) and a fast connection to the motorway (only 15 kilometres) make Trogir, along with its surrounding ports and islands, an inevitable stop during your visit to Dalmatia.
Trogir is on the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage as the best-preserved Romanesque-Gothic town in Central Europe.
Klis
The Breathtaking Fortress of Klis is 15 km from Split and is well worth visiting because it witnesses the resistance of the united Dalmatians in their fight against the Ottomans.
Omiš
Omiš is a picturesque town with a real Mediterranean atmosphere on the estuary of the river Cetina. It is the town of the Dalmatian Music Bands Festival (klapa), governed by the Omiš Pirates for more than two centuries (from 1221-1444), and in the vicinity of which the ancient Republic of Poljica was developed—the first of its kind in Europe.
Omiš is situated in the heart of Dalmatia, between the tourist centres Split and Makarska.
Šibenik
Šibenik, about 85km from Split, is located in the central part of the Croatian Adriatic shore, in a picturesque bay where the River Krka flows into the Adriatic Sea.
It is also the oldest town founded by Croatians on the Adriatic. The most famous sight in the town is the Cathedral of St. James, considered the most important architectural accomplishment of the 15th and 16th centuries in Croatia.
Due to its extraordinary value, the Cathedral has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Zadar
Zadar is about 168 km from Split, the centre of Zadar County and the broader area of northern Dalmatia.
It is an ancient city with historical and cultural sites, such as the famous Roman Forum St. Donatus. Among the more contemporary sites are the Sun Salutation and the Sea Organ.
